Mike Bullock has been part of the 40+ Team Roping Championships for eight going on nine years. He currently resides in Krum, TX with his wife and his beloved grulla horse, Mouse. While he is an avid team roper now, he did not start on the timed event side of the arena. Mike’s first experience with roping was back in 1978 when he was attending what was then known as East Texas State University and is now known as Texas A&M at Commerce.“I started as a bull rider and then I was a saddlebronc rider. My roommate in college was a calf roper, he helped get me started in the roping.”

While Mike was passionate about the sport, his family came first. “I roped until I had three kids, and then I quit roping for 26 years so that I could raise my family. I went back to roping when I was 59 and that’s when I joined the 40+.” Even though he had a later start than most, he has found great success in his team roping career. Mike and his horse, Mouse, have won three 40+ Team Roping Championships saddles. In 2022, they won the World Series Team Roping #9.5 Heartland Championship, and he makes a point to travel to Las Vegas annually to compete in the team roping events held in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo.

When asked about his team roping goals he said, “I am about to be 68 years old and I go to the 40+ events because of the camaraderie, fellowship, and competition. I would like to win big at the World Series, but I just really like to compete and have fun.” Mike uses Mouse for everything from working cows with the neighbors to competing in Las Vegas, and he is also consistent with the gear that he uses. “I ride in a Trent Ward 40+ trophy saddle that I won with a CSI saddle pad and a Cactus rope.”

After retiring from 35 years of service with Peterbilt Motors in Denton, TX Mike enjoys spending time at home, with his family, and at events roping. “My family is very supportive of me, especially my wife. She asked me once if I ever get tired of roping and I asked her if she ever gets tired of going to the casino. We both said no and that was our answer,” Mike said smiling to himself, “But on a serious note I really do have a great support system and I love what I do.”
